„Elektrolyse made in Baden-Württemberg“ Project Successfully Completed
The „Elektrolyse made in Baden-Württemberg“ project, conducted at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), has come to a conclusion. The project has demonstrated the potential for a massive electrolysis market to emerge, which could create new value and job opportunities in the region.
A ceremony was held to celebrate the successful completion of the „Elektrolyse made in Baden-Württemberg“ project, with numerous industry representatives in attendance. Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism, congratulated the project consortium, stating, „The response from the business community speaks for itself. Your project ‚Elektrolyse made in Baden-Württemberg‘ has shown that a huge electrolysis market will emerge in the future, capable of creating new value and jobs in the region.“
„As Minister for Economic Affairs, it is particularly important to me that Baden-Württemberg, with its excellent machinery and plant engineering sector and strong supply industry, seizes the opportunity to export electrolysis technologies from our state to the entire world. The market will experience tremendous growth and offer significant value creation potential,“ emphasized Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut. She continued, „To achieve this, more than ever, timely scaling and ultimately rapid industrial implementation of electrolysis technologies are needed, allowing Baden-Württemberg to fully leverage its strengths as a first-mover.“
Baden-Württemberg possesses numerous competencies and extensive expertise in the field of electrolysis. Within the framework of the project alone, components and technologies from 40 companies were integrated. Over 70 companies actively participated in the industrial dialogue. Several product developments have been realized as a result, with some companies preparing to offer them on the market as early as 2023, thereby specifically planning the establishment of production capacities in Baden-Württemberg. The focus lies on the mass production of electrolysis systems, electrolysis stacks, and relevant supplier components.
The „Elektrolyse made in Baden-Württemberg“ project received a funding of five million euros from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism. It was a collaborative effort involving the ZSW, the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research (DITF), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Hahn-Schickard Society for Applied Research (HS). The centerpiece of the project, the „made in Baden-Württemberg“ electrolysis demonstrator, was symbolically inaugurated by Minister Hoffmeister-Kraut in early August 2022. The demonstrator, now in operation with CE certification, marks the successful conclusion of the project. The alkaline pressure electrolyzer, with an electrical capacity of one megawatt, was built modularly, allowing for easy scaling to larger double-digit megawatt power classes based on this smallest unit, using Baden-Württemberg’s expertise and components.

With its strong industrial base and innovative capabilities, the region is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing global demand for electrolysis technologies.
