Showjumping Success for Richard Vogel in NRW

Baden-Württemberg rider Richard Vogel achieved an impressive second place in the NRW Prize on Friday. The jump-off for the 1.60-meter jumping competition saw 19 participants, with Vogel setting an almost unbeatable time as the fifth rider. Clocking in at 45.67 seconds, Vogel left his competitors struggling to match his pace. It wasn’t until Jana Wargers entered the arena on Dorette that anyone came close to Vogel’s time. The Dollar du Murier daughter executed flawless turns and cleared the jumps, crossing the finish line in just 43.69 seconds. Vogel can be immensely proud of Cepano Baloubet, the nine-year-old DSP stallion bred by Wolfgang Seemann from Rottweil. This impressive horse and rider duo have already achieved notable success, with their biggest victory so far being in the Grand Prix in Wellington earlier this year. It was an intense competition at the Aachener Soers grounds, with the final placements causing great excitement. Ultimately, Michael Jung finished second behind British world champion Yasmin Ingham, while the German team won the Nations Cup. Meanwhile, Tom McEwen lost his chance for victory due to a minor error, leading to him dropping back to 26th place.

In the end, it was a mere second that cost Michael Jung the win. Yasmin Ingham and her twelve-year-old Banzai du Loir had set a strong pace and were in third place before the cross-country course. However, they incurred 1.6 penalty points for exceeding the time limit, resulting in a score of 27.10. Ingham had previously been the fastest rider alongside Christoph Wahler and his Carjatan, a position she managed to maintain. None of the riders were able to complete the course within the best time due to the rain making the ground somewhat softened and causing some horses to lose shoes, preventing them from riding at full speed. Michael Jung and Tom McEwen were the last two riders on the course who could challenge Ingham for the win. Unfortunately, Michi Jung also fell victim to the „shoe curse,“ with his horse Chipmunk losing a front left shoe at the beginning of the course. As a result, the master rider had to lower the tempo, especially during the turns. This cost him time, resulting in an additional 2.8 penalty points. With a total score of 27.20, all he needed was to be a second faster for the victory. McEwen, the current leader, also encountered difficulties. He started confidently on his Holsteiner JL Dublin v. Diarado, but then incurred a refusal at a narrow obstacle. Plus the resulting time penalty, he ended up with 33.60 penalty points from the cross-country phase, resulting in a total of 57.90 penalties and 26th place.

Third place behind Ingham and Jung went to American rider Tamra Smith with her 17-year-old Mai Baum v. Loredano 2. Thanks to his strong cross-country round, Christoph Wahler was able to move up to fourth place.

Due to McEwen’s mistake, the British team dropped to third place in the Nations Cup with 136.6 points, while Germany claimed victory with 104.9 points, followed by the United States in second place with 108.2 points.
