Frankfurt takes off: sustainability fair inspires 350 young talents!
On May 27, 2025, the first “Frankfurt Schools Sustainability Fair” took place on Paulsplatz in Frankfurt. Around 300 to 350 children and young adults from 15 different school projects took part in this important event. The aim of the trade fair was to present sustainable projects and innovative ideas that increase awareness of environmental protection and resource conservation.
The fair's topics ranged from environmentally friendly food transport to the importance of regional and seasonal products. For example, local tomatoes and their environmental benefits were discussed. A particularly notable project was the Wöhlerschule students' deposit bin project, which not only supports the rainforest, but also promotes drinking water wells and school meals in the Global South. This raised awareness of responsible food production.
Diverse projects and interactions
The event, which was coordinated by the “Frankfurt Schools for Sustainability” network, offered a platform for exchange and inspiration between the schools. Particularly noteworthy are the students' creative contributions, such as the Textor School's "17 Development Goals Song" and the Henri Dunant School's performance with the song "You're O.K."
In her speech, head of school Sylvia Weber praised the students' commitment and emphasized their important role in shaping a more sustainable future. Rosalie from the Heinrich Seliger School also gave lectures on local security demands, which further increased the audience's interest in regional environmental issues.
Education for sustainability as the key to change
Today's youth are key players in the transformation of society towards greater sustainability. As the Federal Environment Agency also states, the commitment of children and young people should be incorporated into the planning and implementation of environmental education programs. This participation is crucial to achieving the desired change and ensuring the effectiveness of such projects. Particular emphasis is placed on integrating young people into informal and extracurricular educational situations in order to develop sustainable educational offerings. The “Frankfurt Schools Sustainability Fair” not only represented an important platform for presenting current projects, but also an opportunity for the young people taking part to actively and creatively engage with the topic of sustainability. The response to the trade fair shows how important such events are for the future viability of our society. More information about the event and the participating schools can be found at fr.de.
