Squirrel happiness: New feeding house delights the animals in Heilbronn!

In the current issue of the “My Home” page, which will be published on Saturday, May 31, 2025, the local reporters report on individual garden happiness in Heilbronn. A central issue is the installation of a new squirrel feeder in the main cemetery. Moni Bordt, who reports on the replacement of the feed house, emphasizes that approval from the cemetery administration was granted without any problems. The squirrel and jay enthusiastically accept the offer of fresh food.

At the same time, a photo competition entitled “Garden Happiness” took place in which 486 photographers took part. The winners Heidrun Rosenberger and Elektra Domesle were able to present their creative contributions. While Rosenberger shows colorful buckets that collect rain, Domesle takes the viewer into a blooming garden world with a picture of a ladybug on a viburnum flower.

Squirrel feeder used extensively

The squirrel feeder, which was installed in the garden about two weeks ago, has proven to be a particularly attractive place for the little rodents. It was strategically positioned at the back of an insect hotel as the squirrels often frequent this area. The lid of the feeder can be lifted to access the nuts, although the squirrels initially had a hard time reaching the food. Special tricks were used to show them how the access works.

Some nuts have already been placed on the board in front of the feeder to further motivate the squirrels. However, it remains a little unclear whether the amount of nuts offered might deter the animals from opening the lid. The excitement surrounding the bird feeder is fueled by the hope that it won't be long before visitors will be able to take full advantage of their new bird feeder.

The role of squirrels in nature

As an important part of the ecosystem, squirrels help spread plants. Between spring and autumn they find rich food in nature such as berries, nuts and seeds. In winter they hibernate, but become active several times a day to forage for food. Their excellent sense of smell allows them to locate their supplies even under snow.

The squirrels create numerous food depots, which results in some seeds and nuts being left in the ground. These seedlings ensure the growth of new plants in spring, which means that the squirrels are also considered “rejuvenators” of the forest and thus play an important role in the natural cycle.

For everyone who would like to find out more about current developments around the garden and the fascinating world of squirrels, the monthly newsletter from meine.stimme offers information on competitions, promotions and regional topics. A competition is currently running with the theme “Everything in the Flow”, in which photos of rippling, rushing or flowing motifs can be submitted.

It remains exciting to see how the situation around the new squirrel feeder will develop and what creative contributions can still be expected as part of the “Garden Happiness” competition.
