Rothenburg train station ceremoniously inaugurated: a new transport hub!
In Rothenburg, the renovation of the train station is completed and celebrated with a ceremonial inauguration. The expansion, which significantly strengthens the transport infrastructure in the community, will be officially inaugurated on June 28, 2025. The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bushub West on Hasenmoosstrasse, where the public is cordially invited to celebrate with those responsible and get to know the new station area. After the official opening act, guests are treated to a plate of risotto and drinks, which underlines the festive nature of the event. The inauguration is the result of intensive work that will result in Rothenburg train station functioning as an important transport hub in the canton of Lucerne.
The conversion is part of the public transport concept “AggloMobil due”, which defines targeted measures to improve public transport in Lucerne. The station will not only be structurally modernized, but also redesigned to ensure optimal connections between trains and buses. This includes, among other things, the infrastructure of the SBB stop and the east and west bus hubs, all of which will be designed to be barrier-free in accordance with the Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities Act.
Extensive infrastructure measures
The renovation of the station will be divided into three main projects:
- SBB baut die Haltestelle mit einem Mittelperron und einer zentralen Personenunterführung.
- Die Gemeinde Rothenburg realisiert den Bushub West.
- Der Busbahnhof Ost wird ebenfalls von der Gemeinde ausgebaut.
The measures aim to increase traffic safety on Hasenmoosstrasse and increase the attractiveness of public transport connections. This includes, among other things, raising the platform to 55 cm, building a new central pedestrian underpass and erecting protective platform roofs.
In total, the costs for the measures amount to around 36 million francs, of which 16.35 million francs are covered by a special loan. Construction progress is already well advanced; The new East parking lot has been in operation since March 1, 2025 and the new bus stops at the West Bushub will start on March 15, 2025. The stops at the East Bushub will be available for use until mid-October 2024.
Connection with the railway expansion in Switzerland
These extensive investments and the focus on expanding the infrastructure are in line with the federal government's general efforts to increase capacity in the Swiss rail network. The latest ZEB (Future Development of Railway Infrastructure) program sets out a clear framework for action to meet the requirements of increasing passenger and freight traffic. A total of 4.8 billion francs will, among other things, enable the use of longer double-decker trains on the west-east axis and in Valais.
In addition, financing for necessary measures in the railway sector is secured by the railway infrastructure fund in order to increase the competitiveness of the railway and to improve mobility within and between agglomerations. The BAHN 2050 perspective envisages further expansion projects that take the constantly changing mobility landscape into account.
The inauguration ceremony in Rothenburg represents an important step in the modernization of the transport infrastructure and is part of a broader plan to promote the importance of trains and buses in the everyday lives of people in the region.
