Drug influence in the kitchen: Fire brigade saves sleepy man!

A nighttime incident in Ehingen, Alb-Donau district, triggered a major fire brigade operation. A 49-year-old man was high on alcohol and drugs and fell asleep at the kitchen table while food was burning on the stove in his apartment. Neither the smoke nor the alarm from the smoke detector could wake him up, which ultimately forced the fire department to take action. The emergency services opened the apartment door to wake the man and bring him to safety. But he resisted the measures taken by the fire department and police, who ultimately had to use force to get him out of the apartment. When the police searched the household, they found at least twelve cannabis plants. The man is now being investigated for violating the consumer cannabis law. In addition, he has to bear the costs of the fire brigade operation, as his drunkenness and high levels of intoxicants caused the situation, as zvw.de reports.

The incident also raises questions about the use of cannabis in the fire service. On April 1, 2024, the new Cannabis Act (CanG) came into force in Germany, which sets out clear guidelines for members of the fire brigade. Intoxicated fire brigade members are not allowed to take part in duty or operations. The consumption of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicating substances is strictly prohibited in the fire service. Firefighters who are unable to work safely will be excluded from service. This also includes driving vehicles under the influence of cannabis, which is considered a misdemeanor and can be punished with a limit of 1 ng THC per 1 ml blood serum. There is also no set deadline for returning to fire service after cannabis use; you should wait at least 24 hours after the last dose, as kfv-ab.de emphasizes.

Requirements and protective measures

In addition, the consumption of cannabis in the presence of people under the age of 18 in the fire brigade's child and youth work is prohibited. A strict cannabis ban also applies to all children's and youth fire brigade events, both in the fire station and outside. The fire brigade management also has the option of exercising house rules and issuing a ban on cannabis for non-fire brigade members in fire brigade properties. This shows how seriously safety and health are taken in the fire service.

Given the incidents triggered by the recent fire service, it is important to follow such guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone involved. The consequences of excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs should not be underestimated and require firefighters to act responsibly.
