Construction of the new Schorndorf city library: progress and webcam overview!

In Schorndorf, construction work on the new city library is progressing quickly. This construction site is considered the largest in the city and combines the historic dairy with a modern new building. For the city, the construction is not just an infrastructural project, but also a cultural concern, as planned facilities such as a book tower, a media center and a meeting point will be available to citizens in the future. According to ZVW the goal is to make the old building winter-proof by the end of November by completing the roof structure and lining the framework to ensure its tightness to ensure.

However, the old structures of the city library bring challenges. Parts of the upper floors had to be demolished because they were affected by fungal infestation. According to Stuttgarter Nachrichten, around 60% of the rafters in the old building were infected. The wooden structures date from 1685, restored after the city fire of 1634. Dendrochronological studies were carried out to determine the exact age of the woods.

Current developments and outlook

The removed wood is currently being both restored and replaced to restore the appearance of the building to its original appearance. The city administration has also installed a webcam that is updated every 15 minutes and documents the progress of the construction work online. This webcam is accessible via the city website www.schorndorf.de/webcam and allows interested citizens to follow the progress in real time.

The city library is not the only construction project supported by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. This foundation supports around 600 renovation projects in Germany every year, with a funding volume of around 20 million euros. In total, around 7,500 monuments have been supported so far, including churches, castles, historic gardens and industrial buildings, as highlighted in the reports from Denkmalpflege.

With the impending completion of the city library, Schorndorf is setting an example for the importance of cultural infrastructure and the preservation of historical values, which should be preserved through careful restoration and modernization.
