Next Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 4 p.m., an important handball game is on the program for HC Empor Rostock. In the second leg against HC Oppenweiler/Backnang, the Rostock team wants to book their ticket for the 2nd Bundesliga. The first leg ended just 27:26 for Rostock. Now the team has to prepare for a demanding journey to Baden-Württemberg, which covers around 800 kilometers.
The trip is planned carefully by coach Nicolaj Andersson in order to prepare the players mentally and athletically as best as possible. Individual and group discussions are planned during the trip to Ludwigsburg. Arrival at the hotel is late evening, followed by a tactics briefing and a walk on Sunday morning. After lunch together we go to the Murrtal Arena, where the second leg will take place.
The challenge in the second leg
For Rostock it is important to keep their nerve, as any defeat in this crucial game could mean the end of the promotion race. The only exception: In the event of a one-goal defeat, a high-scoring second leg would still offer Rostockers chances. With a score of 27:26 for Backnang, a seven-meter throw would decide whether they progress. The game will take place in front of a record audience of up to 1,400 spectators, who are expected in the Murrtal Arena thanks to additional stands.

Before the game, head coach Nicolaj Andersson called on HC Empor Rostock fans to loudly support the team. He emphasizes that the strength of the game is due to fast tempo, clever attacking strategies and solid defensive work. The club is under a lot of pressure as the expectations are felt not only by the team but also by the fans. Tobias Woitendorf, the club chairman, sees the game as a reward for the hard work of the entire season.
On the way to the 2nd Bundesliga
Both teams already attempted promotion last season, which ended in a defeat for Rostock against Eintracht Hildesheim. Oppenweiler/Backnang also failed when they lost to TuS Ferndorf. Despite past setbacks, Rostock believes its chances are good in this crucial game, as its opponents have recently achieved mixed results, including a 25:37 defeat against TSV Neuhausen.
In order to survive in a balanced duel, the Rostock team must particularly strengthen their defense. Opposing key players such as Daniel Schliedermann and Jan Forstbauer, the latter of whom scored 137 goals in this league, represent a real challenge for the Rostock defense.
