Denmark takes over the EU chair: challenges for budget and migration!
On Thursday, July 1, 2025, Denmark's Council Presidency of the European Union in Aarhus, the second largest city in the country. Denmark brings this new role to a key position, while important discussions about the long-term EU budget from 2028 to the end of 2034 are imminent. The positions of the Member States are very different, which could make negotiations more difficult. The discussion about the EU budget is of fundamental importance because it influences the financial stability and social expenditure of Member States. According to Article 3 of the EUV, the EU promotes economic, social and territorial cohesion, which is of central importance for the creation of equal opportunities within the Union. The complex calculation of household balances, which takes into account the differences between national contributions and received services, will be in focus during the Denmark Presidency.
In view of these political and financial framework, the EU budget debate Denmark and the other Member States will face many challenges. It remains to be seen how the negotiations will go with regard to the different interests of the net payers and recipients.
