New momentum in the Rotary Club of Cobram: change of president and student support!

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, a significant event was held at the Cobram Bowling Club to formally welcome the new Presidents of the Rotary Club of Cobram. In a handover ceremony, Doug Wright, Hans Zonneveldt and Bill Tom assumed responsibility. Zonneveldt and Tom replace outgoing presidents James Cornish and Ellie Stephens, while Doug Wright remains in his position as president. This tripartite management structure is intended to continue to ensure the management of the club the Cobram Courier reports.

The new board is made up of other committed members: Karen Brown as secretary, Rob Love as treasurer and Neil Cornish and Ellie Stephens as vice-presidents. Ellie Stephens also handles public relations, while Rosemary Shields is responsible for new generations and youth. Neil Kerr will oversee Rotary Foundation and international affairs, Gifford Crosswaite will oversee community service, and Doreen Hill will oversee the newsletter and bulletin. Sally Ivone and Doug Wright are jointly responsible for catering services.

Commitment to youth

Ellie Stephens, the outgoing president, expressed pride in supporting local causes, particularly supporting young people. As part of this initiative, the club sponsored three students to the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Two of the fellows, Adithi Gurunathan and Taylar Knight, will soon travel to the UK to take part in the London International Youth Science Forum. In addition, students Adithi Gurunathan, Taylar Knight and Kail Turner took part in this year's programs in Brisbane and Canberra, supported by Rotary, such as the NYSF website explains.

Rotary's support of the NYSF is critical. The organization not only promotes the opportunity to participate in local communities, but also organizes the management of student applications and selection. Each of Australia's more than 2,000 Rotary clubs, divided into 18 districts, contributes to the advancement of youth in the sciences.

Community aspects and events

The Rotary Club of Cobram is also active in providing financial support for educational activities. The club provided funds for the student trip to Cambodia in collaboration with the Hive Rotary Club. Another highlight of the club's activities was the successful crossover garage sale in Cobram-Barooga, which was very well received by the community. In addition, the first Show 'n' Shine returned since the COVID-19 pandemic and caused a lot of joy in the region.

The Rotary Club's efforts show how important commitment to the community and especially to the younger generation is. Through numerous events and programs, the club not only wants to support local causes, but also promote the young talents of tomorrow.
