Farrell replaces injured Daly – Lions rely on experienced Joker!

Owen Farrell will join the British and Irish Lions squad in Australia, coach Andy Farrell confirmed on Thursday. He replaces the injured Elliot Daly, who suffered an arm injury during the game against the Queensland Reds, which the Lions won 52-12. Daly was sent for an X-ray after the game and is ruled out for the remainder of the tour due to a fractured forearm. Farrell will arrive in Sydney on Friday evening and join the team ahead of the game against the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday.

Coach Andy Farrell expressed his regret over Daly's injury and praised him as a "Lions legend". Owen Farrell, aged 33, has already won 112 career caps for England and 18 appearances for the Lions across the 2013, 2017 and 2021 tours. After a personal retirement from international rugby following the 2023 World Cup in France, he joined Racing 92 in France last year before returning to Saracens this summer. However, after nine weeks away from competitive rugby due to a concussion, he is now fit and ready to play for the Lions.

Current lineup and game information

Andy Farrell has named Fin Smith as fly-half for the upcoming game against the Waratahs. This friendly will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on Saturday. Farrell will be joined by Tadhg Beirne as captain, while Maro Itoje will be given a break at the weekend. The British and Irish Lions' line-up against the New South Wales Waratahs includes the following players:

The substitutes are: Dan Sheehan, Ellis Genge, Tadhg Furlong, Joe McCarthy, Scott Cummings, Jac Morgan, Ben White and Marcus Smith. The Waratahs, also based on a strong line-up, include Lawson Creighton at fullback and Hugh Sinclair as captain.

The British and Irish Lions' tour of Australia is seen as a sporting highlight, with the first of three friendlies scheduled to take place on July 19. These events are part of a long tradition and ongoing rivalry between the British and Irish national rugby teams and their rivals in Australia.
