Fascination with light art: Exclusive exhibition at Schauwerk Sindelfingen
An exciting exhibition entitled “Neon, LED & Co – Light Art from the Schaufler Collection” is currently taking place at the Schauwerk Sindelfingen. This exhibition examines the development of light art from the 1960s to the present and shows how light is used as a material in artistic works. The striking properties of light, which include physical and metaphysical aspects, enable visitors to experience new visual and spatial experiences. A diverse range of materials are used, including light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, neon tubes and LEDs. This art movement opens up an exciting discussion about the various forms of light art, from classic installations to modern laser projections.
The selection of artists in the exhibition is impressive and includes prominent names such as John M Armleder, Tracey Emin, Dan Flavin, Jeppe Hein, Brigitte Kowanz and Otto Piene. In particular, Dan Flavin, who is considered a pioneer of light art, is honored with his groundbreaking works. His iconic artwork of hanging a fluorescent tube in 1963 is humorously quoted by John M. Armleder in his 1996 installation. The exhibition also shows the luminous lettering “You Touch my Soul” by Tracey Emin (2012) and addresses the difference between industrially manufactured and hand-blown lamps.

Conservation challenges
The exhibition also addresses the challenges that arise in the conservation of light works of art, especially since the EU ban on light bulbs in 2009. An example of these challenges is the work “Fire” (1967) by Otto Piene, in which the functionality of the light source is critical. In order to ensure the sustainability of the works of art, the museum hoards lamps to ensure their functionality.
The exhibition at Schauwerk Sindelfingen, which runs until August 10, 2025, is part of a valuable collection that presents light art from different decades. The location of the event is Eschenbrünnlestraße 15, 71065 Sindelfingen. This comprehensive presentation of light art invites you to discover and re-experience the different facets of art. The show not only offers a platform for those interested in art, but also for everyone who wants to experience the fascination of light. In this way, visitors could merge physical discoveries with metaphysical reflections on art, which makes this exhibition particularly creative and exciting.
