Smoking truck in the Schönbuch tunnel: Fire brigade prevents anything worse from happening!

On Wednesday morning, June 18, 2025, the Schönbuchtunnel near Herrenberg was closed for a short time after the fire department was alerted to fight a suspected truck fire. The alarm was raised at around 5:45 a.m., which resulted in a quick response from the fire brigade from Herrenberg and neighboring communities.

However, it turned out on site that there was no fire in the tunnel. The truck that triggered the alarm was already parked outside the tunnel after the driver had successfully uncoupled his tractor. The smoke that alerted the fire department was due to a stuck brake. The emergency services did not have to escalate the situation and the operation was formally downgraded. Compressed fans were used to cool the affected area.

Operations and damage situation

The incident resulted in the tunnel being closed for a short time. The Schönbuchtunnel was completely closed for around five minutes until around 6 a.m., while the right lane in the direction of Singen was closed for around 45 minutes. Fortunately, there were no injuries and it remains unclear whether any damage was caused by the event.

The rapid response of the Herrenberg fire department, which arrived with a strong team, prevented a major incident. This rapid response is the result of experiences from previous operations, such as a similar incident in the Schönbuch Tunnel on June 3, 2022. During this alarm, 22 emergency services from different departments were on duty for over an hour, which contributed to improving the coordination and operational readiness of the fire department.

The truck was ultimately towed away by a breakdown service. These operations show how important the immediate response of the fire department is in potential emergencies and how crucial good coordination is for safety on the roads. Thanks to its experienced members, the fire department was able to act quickly and efficiently in this matter.
