New hiking trails in Esslingen: Discover the Swabian Alb!
The revision of the hiking trail network in the Swabian Alb biosphere area was successfully completed. Specifically, new, uniform signage was installed in the Esslingen district, which aims to provide the best orientation for hikers. A total of 295 kilometers of hiking trails have been equipped with clear green and yellow signs, ensuring seamless guidance through the region's charming nature. This is reported by the Stuttgart News.
As part of these measures, six new circular hiking trails were identified in the cities of Lenningen, Frickenhausen, Owen and Altdorf. The official opening of the new basic hiking trail network took place at the Hochholz/Astropfad car park near Erkenbrechtsweiler. Participants in this event included mayors, tourism experts and representatives of forestry and nature conservation authorities. District Administrator Marcel Musolf emphasized the importance of this initiative to strengthen the Swabian Alb hiking region.
Extensive funding and new opportunities
The construction of the new signage was supported by the state's tourism program with around 700,000 euros. The project basis lies in the hiking concept “Middle Alb, Albtrauf and Swabian Alb Biosphere Area”. In addition to the circular hiking trails, hikers can also access 22 premium hiking tours certified as “hochgehberge”, seven of which can be found in the Esslingen district. These premium trails, which have been awarded by the German Hiking Institute, offer a comprehensive and varied hiking experience in this naturally beautiful region.
In addition to the clearly visible new signage, yellow signs mark the basic network of paths as well as long-distance hiking trails and theme trails. Green signs, on the other hand, point to the local circular hiking trails. This structured information enables even less experienced hikers to explore the most beautiful corners of the Swabian Alb.
A variety of activities in nature
The Swabian Alb not only attracts with clear hiking trails, but also with an impressive natural diversity. There are a variety of hiking options in the region, from short distances to circular hikes to challenging long-distance hiking trails. The top hikes include popular routes such as the beer hiking trail in Ehingen, the DonauWelle Donaufelsen tour and the Traufgang Felsenmeersteig. The selection is extensive and offers suitable routes for both families and passionate hikers.
There are also gastronomic offerings available along the hiking trails to round off the trip into the countryside. Whether for a quick refreshment or a longer stay – the region ensures the physical well-being of its visitors. The well-known marketing cooperation “hochgehberge”, which includes the Esslingen and Reutlingen districts as well as the Mythos Schwäbische Alb tourism community, also contributes to the awareness and maintenance of the hiking routes.
More than 830 volunteers are also actively involved in the club area by maintaining the hiking trail network. An impressive 24,000 volunteer hours were contributed in 2024, underscoring the community's connection to its hiking region. This voluntary work is of central importance in maintaining the accessibility and quality of the hiking trails in the Swabian Alb at a high level.
