Diakoniemuseum Rummelsberg: A decade in the service of history!

On May 29, 2025, the Diakoniemuseum Rummelsberg will celebrate its tenth birthday. The museum was founded in 2015 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Rummelsberg Diakonie. The initiator of the founding was the then rector Günter Breitenbach. In recent years, the museum has developed into an important place of remembrance and education about the history of Diakonie in Bavaria, as n-land.de reports.

The Diakoniemuseum is housed in the former craftsman's house of the Rummelsberger Diakonie. Extensive structural measures were necessary for the renovations. Walls had to be broken through to allow a tour. Dr. Thomas Greif, the museum director, and the museum educator Deacon Martina Fritze report on the challenges that the team overcame during the redesign phase and the subsequent exhibitions.

Exhibitions and digital formats

In the past ten years, five major exhibitions have been realized, each of which took several years to prepare. A third of the costs go towards the scientific preparation of these exhibitions. It is particularly worth mentioning that the museum also deals with topics that are unpleasant, such as the research on the SS man Martin Sommer in the exhibition “Kaiser, Chancellor, Rummelsberger”.

In addition to classic tours, digital formats are increasingly being used. An interesting addition is the interactive scavenger hunt, which allows visitors to discover the museum in a playful way. In the future, the museum plans to introduce AI-supported educational offerings to further improve visitor interaction.

Future exhibitions and historical responsibility

The next major exhibition planned from April 2026 will deal with the role of diakonia in National Socialism. This show will make individual victim biographies from Bavarian Inner Mission facilities public for the first time. The aim of this exhibition is to clarify the shared responsibility of diaconal organizations during the Nazi era and to highlight forms of resistance. The official opening of this new exhibition is scheduled for April 24, 2026, as diakonie-bayern.de informs.

The Diakonie has over 70 years of history in its current form and its roots lie in the “Inner Mission”, which was founded in 1848. Wilhelm Löhe is considered an important founding father in Bavaria. Initially the focus was on support for children and young people, later on sick, old and disabled people were added. The Diakoniemuseum Rummelsberg therefore plays a central role in processing and communicating this rich history and the ongoing responsibility of diaconal action, as diakoniemuseum.de makes clear.

The upcoming celebrations for the museum's milestone birthday not only point to the achievements of the past few years, but also to the challenges and the responsibility that Diakonie bears for the future. The museum team looks forward to celebrating the achievements while bringing attention to the significant issues that remain relevant today.
