Altdorf is planning a summer pedestrian zone: a market square will become an oasis!
On June 10, 2025, a proposal to create a summer pedestrian zone will be specifically discussed in Altdorf. Christian Lamprecht, a member of the city council, suggests closing part of the Altdorf market square to car traffic during the summer months. The aim of this initiative is to increase the attractiveness of the marketplace and give open-air dining a boost. The proposal will receive a lot of interest and city representatives will discuss the reactions and possible implementation at their meetings nn.de.
A similarly successful measure is already taking place in neighboring Günzburg, where the market square functions as a pedestrian zone from March 1st to October 31st. During this time, the zone is completely closed to cars between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m. However, residents and suppliers are given special permits to drive at walking pace outside of these times. Second Mayor Anton Gollmitzer highlights the numerous benefits of the pedestrian zone, including increasing safety for visitors and promoting open-air dining altdorfonline.de.
Possible requirements for Altdorf
The discussion about the implementation of a pedestrian zone in Altdorf also brings to light practical challenges. Prerequisites could be a northern bypass, additional parking options outside the city center and possibly the establishment of a parking garage on the Röder parking lot. At the same time, improving the connection to outlying areas by means of on-call buses or better bus connections is considered important in order to ensure the accessibility of the market place for locals and guests.
The initiators of the proposal are already sketching out ideas for an attractive program that could revitalize the summer pedestrian zone. Considerations include events such as city beaches, beach volleyball, boules, as well as concerts or even outdoor cinemas. These activities would not only increase the attractiveness of the marketplace, but also strengthen the community and create a positive ambience that attracts both residents and tourists.
