Mercedes-Benz relies on e-mobility: Untertürkheim becomes a key plant!

The automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is pushing its electrification strategy and is relying on its production sites in Germany. The plants in Untertürkheim, Mettingen and Hedelfingen play a central role, where the electric drive units and axles for the new CLA are produced. Loud jesmb.de A drive unit consists of an electric motor, power electronics and a gear part for power transmission. The power-transmitting wheel set and other important components are also manufactured at these locations. The entire assembly of the components ultimately takes place in the Untertürkheim factory.

The electric axles for the CLA come from Mettingen, which are then transported to the Rastatt plant, 70 km away. The production facility in Untertürkheim will celebrate its 120th anniversary in 2024 and is still an important link in automobile production. Every year, more than 2 million products, including engines, transmissions and axles, leave the factory to be used in vehicles on three continents.

Focus on electromobility

Mercedes-Benz has set clear goals and plans to have fully electric production in all areas where market conditions allow by the end of the year. From 2024, electric drive systems, including batteries and axles, will be manufactured at the various locations. Loud elektroauto-news.net Untertürkheim will become the largest location in the powertrain production network and production capacity will double to one million units.

The Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Accumotive in Kamenz, Saxony, supplies the high-voltage batteries for the new CLA and has specialized in the production of battery systems since 2012. More than two million batteries have already been manufactured there. From 2024, the Kamenz site will also play an important role in the production of new all-electric models.

Sustainability and new technologies

In a further step towards sustainable development, the first mechanical-hydrometallurgical battery recycling factory in Europe was opened on the site of the Kuppenheim plant. This initiative underlines Mercedes-Benz's commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint. All in-house production facilities have been CO2-neutral since 2022.

In order to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also implementing comprehensive qualification and retraining programs for employees at the various locations. This ensures that the workforce is optimally prepared for the new requirements of electromobility.

The strategy for producing electric drive systems is part of a comprehensive plan that invests a mid-single-digit billion amount in the European production sites. These investments are intended not only to advance electrification, but also to ensure the company's competitiveness in the global automotive market.
