Upgrade of the Albersloher Weg: security measures and new traffic routing!

The city of Münster is planning comprehensive measures to improve and ensure safety along the Albersloher Weg. This important connecting road represents the main axis for traffic from the south-southeast of the city towards the city center. However, Albersloher Weg, which has four lanes up to the city center, is suffering from increasing traffic volumes, particularly due to planned new development areas on Hiltruper Straße and Osttor, which is likely to further increase the burden. Commuters are already reporting traffic jams in the constriction areas and at traffic lights, which are affecting accessibility to the city. Although the path behind the Anglo-Saxon Path only has two lanes, there is a lack of pedestrian and cycle paths on both sides as well as turning lanes, which makes the situation more difficult for cyclists and pedestrians. The planned measures aim to defuse the traffic situation in order to prioritize both cycling and local public transport.

The city's goal is to create a congestion-free connection from Hiltruper Straße to the city center that is suitable for buses as well as bicycles and e-bikes. According to gruene-muenster-suedost.de, the trees along the Albersloher Weg should also be preserved in order to make an ecological contribution to noise reduction and climate protection. In this context, the city is also planning the expansion between Angelsachsenweg and Osttor/Hiltruper Straße, although the individual costs of the projects are currently unclear.

Further developments in Münster

In addition to the discussion about the Albersloher Weg, there are other developments that affect Münster. The University of Münster continues to receive funding for its “Mathematics” Cluster of Excellence, while the “Religion and Politics” cluster is no longer funded. The preparatory work for the latter is being discontinued, which is likely to have a significant impact on the academic landscape in Münster. In addition, a warning strike at Provinzial Münster is attracting attention, as around 650 employees are affected by the lack of collective bargaining, which could temporarily lead to service restrictions.

Furthermore, a fire in a carpentry shop on Hammer Strasse was quickly extinguished without causing any major damage to the building. Socially relevant projects are also being pushed forward in Münster, such as the inauguration of a story bench at the Marienschule in Hiltrup, which was built by people with disabilities.

The fiber optic expansion in the outskirts is also being pushed forward: Epcan GmbH plans to provide around 1,300 addresses with fiber optic connections by the end of 2027, which will require an investment of around 12.1 million euros. Another highlight is in education: The new water workshop at the Hornheide waterworks is intended to teach students how to use the valuable element water.
