Tree felling in the Swabian Forest: Safety first!

In the Swabian Forest, more specifically in the Ebnisee area, trees are currently being felled to ensure the safety of all road users. How ZVW Reportedly, these are mostly dead trees or those that are in danger of falling over. This poses a risk for drivers and hikers, which is why ForstBW will be carrying out the tree felling work in the coming weeks. The work has already begun, and in order not to unnecessarily disrupt traffic, mobile construction sites with mobile traffic lights are being used. Short full closures of one to three minutes each are planned.

Similar discussions are underway in another part of Baden-Württemberg, the Schurwald near Stuttgart. Here the commercial forest is also heavily managed and tree felling takes place regularly. However, the citizens' initiative “Schutzwald-Schurwald” is vehemently committed to protecting the forests and calling for the clearing to stop. Loud SWR ForstBW argues that these measures are necessary to better prepare the forest for climate change. ForstBW is planning to plant new climate-resistant tree species such as oaks.

Criticism of forest management

The citizens' initiative, represented by Michael Hoffmann, criticizes the skid paths created by the heavy machinery. Due to their hardening properties, these could affect the soil's water absorption during heavy rain. Hoffmann calls for the forest to be left alone and has already launched a petition to fight for the preservation of the Schurwald as intact nature. The aim of the initiative is to transform this into a “sponge forest” that enables better water absorption and storage.

This discussion shows a deep cut in the debate about proper forest management in times of climate change. While ForstBW sees the active use of the forest as a social obligation, the citizens' initiative is of the opinion that a healthy forest should not be managed. Disagreement between the two parties remains, particularly over the best strategies to adapt forests to the climate challenges of the future.
