A tragic accident has occurred at Eibsee, with a six-year-old boy and his father missing in the waters. The incident happened during a pedal boat tour on Saturday afternoon. The boy fell from the boat, and when the father tried to save him, he also failed to surface. The boy's mother, 34, and four-year-old daughter were also on the boat and were unharmed but needed support. The family comes from the Haßberge district in Lower Franconia.
The first water rescue workers were at the scene of the accident three minutes after the emergency call at around 11:15 a.m. The search operation included water rescue divers, firefighters and a helicopter, all deployed to find the two missing people. According to the ZVW There is currently no evidence of foul play, and the Weilheim criminal police have taken over the investigation. Police suspect it was an unfortunate incident.
Ice accidents at Eibsee
The Eibsee is not only known for its beauty, but also for the dangers it poses, especially in winter. On Thursday, another incident in which a 25-year-old man from India broke into the ice caused a lot of attention. Together with 15 other tourists, he went onto the ice, which was apparently unstable. He had to be resuscitated and is now in a stable but critical condition.
Police were informed shortly before 2 p.m. and a total of 16 people were on the ice. Three people, including the 25-year-old, broke completely through the ice. Two brave men, aged 37 and 43, helped pull the injured people out of the water in a boat. The emergency services were deployed with several helicopters, ambulances and fire departments. A total of 14 people were injured, including 11 with minor injuries such as hypothermia.
Safety warnings and prevention measures
The incidents spark discussions about safety at Eibsee. Experts from the Bavarian Water Rescue Service warn of the dangers of entering ice surfaces that have not been approved. Especially at temperatures above zero degrees Celsius, as is currently the case at Eibsee, people can be in danger of losing their lives. Despite warm temperatures, numerous people were spotted on the ice, prompting authorities to issue clear warnings.
The Eibsee, a popular excursion destination in the municipality of Grainau and privately owned, remains a place full of natural beauty, but also poses a challenge for the safety of visitors, especially during the winter months.
