Tender crisis: 34,000 training positions available in Baden-Württemberg!

The training situation in Baden-Württemberg remains tense: there are currently more than 34,000 training positions unfilled. Over half of the training positions offered in the southwest are still vacant, which indicates serious discrepancies in the market. This situation is particularly noticeable when compared to the almost 67,000 training positions reported in May 2023 and the declines in the previous two years. Loud ZVW Only around 46,300 applicants registered, which highlights the unfilled positions even more clearly.

Of the applicants, almost 12,400 have a foreign passport, an increase of over 16% compared to last year. Many of these young people are refugees who are looking for a new perspective in Germany. Despite this increase, around 22,700 young people are still looking for a training place, which illustrates the need for solutions.

Committee of Opportunities: Reasons for unfilled training positions

The main reasons for the lack of placements are problems of matching the requirements of the companies and the qualifications of the young people. Important aspects such as grades, language skills and social skills play a crucial role here. Employers are apparently not always willing to give applicants who are having difficulty getting started a chance - in many cases there could be untapped potential.

In order to overcome these challenges, there are funding programs such as “assisted training” that support companies in finding suitable applicants and during training. However, in 2024 only 6,320 companies in Baden-Württemberg took advantage of this funding instrument. This suggests that there is still considerable potential in the use of such offers of help.

Market situation and training occupations

The situation on the training market is not only characterized by unfilled positions, but also by a large number of possible professions. In Baden-Württemberg, for example, training positions in various areas are still available. This includes:

  • Altenpflegehelfer/in: 64
  • Bankkaufmann/frau: 101
  • Fachverkäufer/in Lebensmittelhandwerk: 382
  • Kaufmann/frau im Einzelhandel: 2.048
  • Mechatroniker/in: 128
  • Pflegefachmann/frau: 163

This list shows that the opportunities for prospective trainees in various sectors are extensive. However, the challenge of finding suitable candidates for the open positions remains.

Another aspect of the current training situation is the need to promote diversity and tolerance. Employers are encouraged to consider applicants who may have unconventional resumes or who may be struggling to get started. This perspective could help to increase the low interest in many training places and combat the shortage of skilled workers in the country.

The coming months will be crucial for the development of the training market in Baden-Württemberg. Only through close cooperation between companies, educational institutions and the young people themselves will it be possible to overcome the existing barriers.
