Old cell phones instead of drawers: fundraising campaign started in Waiblingen church!
Old cell phones, tablets and chargers can be donated at the Catholic Church of St. Maria in Waiblingen-Neustadt from now until January 11, 2026. This campaign, called “Cell Phone as a Collection,” is intended to help collect used and unsaleable cell phones. Easy drop-off options include a gray collection box in the church and participation in church services and community events. The campaign is organized by the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. People who keep old devices in their drawers are particularly encouraged to recycle them sensibly.
The “Mobile Phones as a Collection” campaign is based on a joint appeal by the large Christian churches in Baden-Württemberg, which was launched on the occasion of the Ecumenical Creation Day on September 1st. Under the motto: “God, you help people and animals,” the initiative aims to encourage the reuse and recycling of cell phones. The increasing sales of cell phones and the associated energy and raw material consumption have motivated churches to promote sustainable alternatives. This underlines the need to conserve resources and protect the environment.
Support for projects in the Global South
An important aspect of the campaign is that for every cell phone collected, a financial contribution is made to church aid organizations such as “missio Aachen” and “Bread for the World”. These funds flow directly into projects that benefit people in the Global South. The call for donations is part of a broader initiative that promotes a sustainable lifestyle and the responsible use of technology.
The collected devices offer a chance to recycle or reuse old cell phones in an environmentally friendly way instead of throwing them in the trash. The campaign is not only intended for the local community, but for everyone who would like to make a contribution to minimizing resource consumption and at the same time helping people in need. Further information about the collection and the drop-off points can be found on the websites of the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Additional details about the campaign can also be found on the pages of ZVW and DRS.
