Disney postpones Avengers films: New dates and big plans!

Disney has postponed the release of its next two “Avengers” films by more than half a year. This was announced today. “Avengers: Doomsday,” originally scheduled for May 1, 2026, will now debut on December 18, 2026. “Avengers: Secret Wars” will also be postponed from its original date of May 7, 2027 to December 17, 2027.

In addition, an untitled Marvel project that was scheduled for February 13, 2026 was canceled without replacement. Instead, two new untitled Marvel films will be released under the “Untitled Disney” banner on November 6, 2026 and November 5, 2027.

Realignment of Disney and Marvel

The changes come as part of a realignment of Disney and Marvel's superhero policies. In the future, the group will pursue a strategy that aims to produce fewer but higher quality films. The reasons for this are the perception of superhero fatigue among viewers and numerous failures of Marvel films in recent years, especially when introducing new characters. Disney plans to focus more on successful characters like Deadpool, Wolverine and Captain America.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. will appear as the new main antagonist, Doctor Doom. This marks a departure from his previous role as Iron Man. Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor. The film also brings back other popular characters, including characters from the "X-Men" films as well as the newly formed Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts.

However, the release date is not the only thing that has changed. The “Avengers: Doomsday” project, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and based on a screenplay by Jeff Loveness, was originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022. Filming is scheduled for March 2025 in London and is expected to wrap in August. Over 60 characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are expected to appear in the film, highlighting the ambition behind this project.

Future developments

The shifts and realignments also have to do with internal restructuring within Marvel Studios. Following Jonathan Majors' conviction for assault and harassment, the studio officially parted ways with him. Michael Waldron has been hired as the new screenwriter for Avengers: Doomsday. As of June 2024, Shawn Levy and the Russo brothers were in talks to direct the project, while Alan Silvestri will compose the film's score.

Overall, Disney and Marvel's realignment represents an exciting twist in the history of superhero films and could pave the way for new stories and characters. The upcoming films, particularly Avengers: Doomsday, are likely to be highly anticipated as they promise the return of some of the franchise's most popular characters.
