Asian tiger mosquito in Waiblingen: City refuses Bti tablets!

The Asian tiger mosquito is currently causing a stir in Waiblingen because it has been detected less than ten times in the region. The first detection of this invasive species occurred in 2023. The city administration recently reported the findings in the official gazette, which led to requests from the population for Bti tablets to combat the mosquito. A surprising answer from the city of Waiblingen: no Bti tablets are given out. This was also discussed in the article in the Staufer-Kurier, which highlights the city's current steps.

But why is the distribution of Bti tablets so important? These tablets are a proven biocide for combating mosquito larvae. Baden-Württemberg now sees the need to facilitate the distribution of these funds. At a conference of the health ministers of the federal states in Weimar, a corresponding proposal was passed unanimously. Currently, complex consultations have to be held before the tablets are handed out, which is not possible for many town halls due to staff shortages daily news reported.

Prevention and caution

Although there have been no transmissions of tropical infectious agents by the Asian tiger mosquito in Baden-Württemberg to date, the concern is not unfounded. This mosquito can transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya or Zika, but only if it has previously bitten an infected returning traveler. Returnees from tropical countries should take special mosquito protection measures for the first 14 days after their return.

These protective measures include wearing covering clothing, using mosquito repellent and installing mosquito nets. Every citizen can also help control the tiger mosquito population by avoiding pooling water outdoors. Water containers in particular should either be closed, emptied regularly or removed. It is also advisable to clean bird baths and dog bowls weekly and refill them.

Active citizen participation is important. Sightings of Asian tiger mosquitoes can be reported to the Municipal Action Group to Combat the Flycatcher Plague (KABS). Characteristics of the Asian tiger mosquito include a prominent white stripe on the back of the head and five white stripes on the hind legs, making it easy to identify. It remains to be hoped that through increased sensitivity and combined measures, the tiger mosquito population in Waiblingen and the surrounding area can continue to be kept in check.
