B 14 near Backnang: Construction site will cause traffic chaos from July!

From mid-July 2025, commuters and road users can expect a significant change on the B 14 between Leutenbach-Nellmersbach and Backnang-West. According to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, the road will be partially closed, which is part of the extensive expansion work on the B 14. In particular, the closure affects construction section 2.3, which focuses on the new pair of twin bridges for the Murrtal Viaduct. Work on this construction project, which covers an assembly area of 25,000 square meters, has been underway since March 2025. Over two million cubic meters of earth were moved.

The period from July 2, 2025 is particularly relevant, when Deutsche Bahn begins laying new cables. This measure will affect traffic on Erbstetter Strasse and will require traffic lights to be maintained. From July 17th, the entrance and exit ramps of the B 14 from the direction of Schwäbisch Hall in the direction of Stuttgart will be closed, which is expected to last until July 23rd. Drivers should expect delays, especially during rush hour.

Closures and diversions

The current diversion, which is also signaled in Backnang, directs drivers towards Schwäbisch Hall. The closure particularly affects the direction of travel to Schwäbisch Hall between the Maubacher Höhe intersection and the Backnang-West junction. This construction work is scheduled from Monday, June 2nd to Monday, June 16th, 2025. During these two weeks, the affected road sections, such as the former Backnang/Erbstetten bridge, as well as other junctions, will be completely closed, which will place additional strain on the traffic situation.

The planned end of the lockdown is scheduled for Monday, June 16th at 10 p.m. Detour signs will be prominently placed in the area. A large-scale diversion is planned for heavy traffic from the Backnang-Süd junction via Heinrich-Hertz-Straße, Weissach im Tal and Mittelbrüdener Straße.

Long-term effects

Bridge construction itself is scheduled to begin in January 2026, followed by track closures in summer 2027. These will result in rail replacement services for a period of three months. The construction cost of this section is estimated at 52 million euros, with technical challenges in recycling the excavated material, depending on the soil type and chemical values.

Despite the temporary restrictions, the expansion promises to provide wider bridges and better connections to surrounding areas in the long term. Traffic information and current information on construction sites can be accessed via the “VerkehrsInfo BW” app and the corresponding website in order to better adapt timetables.

For many commuters, everyday life will change significantly as a result of the upcoming measures. Although the long-term benefits of the expansion are promising, there will be longer travel times and more traffic jams during the transition period.
