Abu Dhabi's DGE: Efficient government that can serve as a role model for the USA!
The Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), created by President Donald Trump and headed by Elon Musk, aims to reduce inefficient spending by the US government. However, the promised savings of $1 trillion could not be realized. Instead, the initiative led to a chaotic decline of key institutions, the loss of experienced officials and legal challenges from unions, such as Thenationalnews reported.
In contrast, the Department of Government Enablement (DGE) in Abu Dhabi, which has been in existence for 18 months, is demonstrating a methodical, data-driven transformation. DGE has clearly placed the focus on saving time. Through the use of artificial intelligence and other workflow reduction measures, the processing time for social support applications has been reduced from 90 to 18 days. These advancements go hand in hand with the introduction of digital payments and a digital wallet.
Progress and successes of the DGE
The DGE is already showing significant success. Over 40 government agencies in Abu Dhabi work together to increase “customer satisfaction”. A dedicated app, Tamm, has resulted in AED 134 million being saved and 4.1 million man-hours being recovered. The introduction of the “AI-Powered Objective Builder” supports the annual objectives of over 15,000 employees, which noticeably increases efficiency.
The DGE's vision is far-reaching: it presents plans to strengthen the economy by AED 24 billion (equivalent to USD 6.5 billion) and create 5,000 new jobs. This proactive approach could serve as a model for other countries, including the United States, that could learn from the DGE's collaborative approaches.
Challenges and future prospects
In summary, the approaches and results of the DGE in Abu Dhabi provide a contrasting insight into the effectiveness of larger government initiatives. The DGE could serve as a model for future reforms in other countries to promote innovative and responsible governance.
