Family drama in Remseck: man stabs wife - trial is ongoing!

On March 20, 2025, a tragic family drama occurred in Neckargröningen, a district of Remseck (Ludwigsburg district). A 48-year-old man is suspected of murdering his 48-year-old wife. The incident took place at around 5:50 a.m. when the accused surprised his wife while she was sleeping and stabbed her several times with a Japanese kitchen knife with a blade length of 13.5 cm. The woman suffered 25 stab and cut injuries, one fatal stab hit her in the heart.

After the crime, the accused man inflicted serious stab wounds on himself and was subsequently treated in hospital for almost three weeks. His suicidal intent, expressed after the incident, shows the deep emotional conflict he is experiencing. He and his wife had two sons, aged 14 and 15, who were not physically injured in the incident but had to be placed in the care of relatives. The children were in the house at the time of the crime.

Trial and investigations

The murder trial against the defendant began at the Stuttgart regional court at the end of September. The prosecution considers the murder standard of treachery to be met and the trial will continue on October 23rd, while a verdict is expected on December 4th. On the second day of the trial, the defendant did not publicly comment on the allegations; nevertheless, he showed signs of grief and was crying when he was discovered by a first responder. He found him next to his wife with a knife covered in blood.

The police were alerted at 6:00 a.m. after emergency services found the two people in the apartment. The criminal investigation department at the Ludwigsburg police headquarters has taken over the investigation. The background to the horrific crime could have been the woman's desire to separate, which indicates deeper family conflicts.

Social context

The case in Remseck is another example of the widespread violence against women in Germany. Statistics show that in 2023, approximately 181,000 women were victims of domestic violence, representing 71% of all registered cases. This highlights the severity of the problem, which often begins in one's own home and includes not only physical but also psychological abuse.

Femicide, defined as the killing of women based on gender inequality, remains a pressing societal problem. In 2023, 938 such acts or attempts were recorded by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, which is celebrated annually on November 25th, is intended to draw attention to this problem and emphasize the need for change in society.

Helplines such as the “Violence Against Women” helpline are available to offer support to affected women. In 2023, the helpline recorded around 86,700 contacts. However, space in women's shelters often remains limited, which poses challenges for many women when they want to seek protection.

The trial in Remseck will not only shape the fate of the affected family, but also serve as a reminder to society to continue the urgently needed conversations about domestic violence and the lives of women in Germany.
