Schorndorf focuses on pedestrian-friendliness: new passage at the train station!
The city of Schorndorf has taken a significant step to improve the pedestrian infrastructure at the station forecourt. After a comprehensive foot traffic check that took place in 2023, the first of three planned focus measures has now been successfully implemented. This reports Stuttgart News.
The newly designed passage for pedestrians on the station forecourt towards the Lower Market Square is intended to increase the accessibility and attractiveness of the city center. Supported by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, another goal of the pedestrian traffic check is pursued: improving the pedestrian infrastructure to strengthen retail and catering in the region.
Sustainable mobility in focus
In order to improve the conditions for walking, Schorndorf successfully applied for the 2023 pedestrian traffic check. According to Schorndorf city website The city was selected by a jury of experts and is one of the twelve winning municipalities in the project. The pedestrian traffic check aims to raise political awareness of the concerns of pedestrians and to optimize the infrastructure.
Baden-Württemberg has set itself the goal of making 30 percent of all journeys on foot by 2030. A good infrastructure without obstacles is essential for this. The foot traffic check comprised several components: the initial workshop, two inspections to analyze the current situation, the development of ideas for solving problems and a final workshop to present the results.
Concrete measures and further steps
The results of the project are promising and were summarized in a final report that presents 16 concrete measures to improve walking in Schorndorf. These also rely on successful examples from other municipalities. Among the solutions developed is the barrier-free passage that has now been implemented and, with a width of two meters, can accommodate the high volume of pedestrians.
Decorative plant pots were also integrated to enhance the passage not only functionally but also visually. The city of Schorndorf is also already planning the next measures as part of the pedestrian traffic check to further improve the pedestrian situation.
