MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg signs Latvian international Skuja!
The Latvian basketball player Toms Skuja becomes a new player for MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg. The 23-year-old is moving from Rīgas Zeļļi and has signed a contract until 2027, which includes mutual exit options. Skuja, who will wear number 5, will expand the team's guard rotation. The move was made following successful medical examinations and in relation to an agreed release clause.
Skuja brings extensive experience from professional basketball. He has been active since the 2017/2018 season and has played for teams such as Valmiera, Fuenlabrada in Spain and Rīgas Zeļļi, among others. This season he averaged 12.0 points, 5.5 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in 61 appearances with Rīgas Zeļļi. His team reached third place in the 2025 Optibet Latvian-Estonian Basketball League.
National player with a lot of potential
Toms Skuja's sporting potential is also recognized by head coach Mikko Riipinen, who speaks positively about the new player's abilities. Skuja made his debut with the Latvian national team in 2024 and competed in the EuroBasket qualifiers. The player has already played for Latvia in the 2011 U19 World Cup.
Toms Skuja was born on January 2, 2002, is 1.90 m tall, weighs 85 kg and plays at the position of point guard. It remains uncertain whether he will be used in the next game against Weißenfels.
Latvia at the 2025 European Basketball Championship
In the national context, Latvia will appear as one of the four hosts at the European Basketball Championship next year, 2025. The team recently experienced great success by placing fifth at the 2023 World Cup. National coach Luca Banchi has announced the final squad for the European Championships, which also includes prominent players such as Kristaps Porziņģis and Dāvis Bertāns.
Latvia will compete in Group A. The group opponents are Turkey, Estonia, Serbia, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The games will take place at the Xiaomi Arena in Riga, and the European Championships will run from August 27th to September 14th, 2025.
The challenges to qualify for the round of 16 are great, but Latvia has a good chance of qualifying through the top four teams in each group.
The signing of Toms Skuja could therefore be of great importance for both MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg and the Latvian national team.
