Kornwestheim in turmoil: Huge new railway building meets with resistance!
In Kornwestheim, a planned construction project by Deutsche Bahn is causing heated discussions. The city administration has vehemently objected to the new building at the train station, which is 54 meters long and 23 meters high and is shocking residents and local politicians. Mayor Nico Lauxmann and First Mayor Daniel Güthler have therefore asked members of the Bundestag and state parliament for support in examining possible alternatives that could do justice to the city and its residents. According to the city administration, the railway acts without a comprehensible examination of alternative locations and only uses 32 parking spaces for 16 workplaces without offering a photovoltaic system or a green roof. In this context, the city criticizes the scale and necessity of the project.
Federal politicians are alarmed about the situation. Steffen Bilger from the CDU plans to ask the Federal Railway Authority for a statement in exchange with the city and Deutsche Bahn. Sandra Detzer from the Greens is calling for urgent talks between the railway and the city to find a solution. Macit Karaahmetoglu from the SPD expressed shock at the scale of the construction project and called for greater involvement of the municipalities in the planning. On the other hand, Martin Hess from the AfD sees the city's criticism as unfounded and emphasizes the need for functioning railway systems. Silke Gericke, also from the Greens, sees the need for the railway to seriously examine the city's concerns and calls for an intensive dialogue.
Current construction work in Kornwestheim
In parallel to the discussions about the construction project, Deutsche Bahn is currently carrying out track renewals in Kornwestheim. This work is located at Bogenstrasse and at the passenger station and will take place between September 15th and October 26th, 2025. Work on the construction sites takes place daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in order to keep noise nuisance for residents as low as possible. The railway has announced that it will also work on weekends to avoid delays in construction progress. However, the S-Bahn connections remain unaffected due to these construction sites.
In addition, night-time tamping work is planned for November 2025, which will serve to compact the track bed and ensure the stability of the rails. Deutsche Bahn asks for your understanding for the unavoidable noise pollution, which cannot be completely eliminated despite modern technologies. Residents with questions or complaints can contact the railway via a project mailbox.
Digital node Stuttgart
Meanwhile, extensive work is also underway as part of the “Digital Node Stuttgart” project. Various construction measures are planned between Waiblingen and Bad Cannstatt for 2023, while buses will be organized every five minutes as replacement transport. Using more than 80 buses and around 240 drivers, Deutsche Bahn aims to maintain travel despite the construction sites and has taken special measures to keep travelers informed of any changes. The affected connections and stops will be published in the timetable media and additional services will be available to accommodate travelers.
