Hemmingen celebrates newborns: A family celebration for 80 little miracles!

In Hemmingen, a small town near Hanover, a special event was recently held to welcome newborns and their families. A total of 80 newborn children and their families were welcomed into the Arnumer Feldmäuse crèche. Among the participants were 19 families who were able to use the opportunity to network and gather information. Particularly noteworthy is the youngest guest, four-week-old Lias, who was present with his parents, Benjamin and Leonie Laag. The Laag family recently moved from Hanover's Südstadt to Arnum, which represents an important phase in their lives.

Leonie Laag, who grew up in Arnum, expressed her joy about the safe environment for children. This is an important aspect that many new residents like Sarah and Jan Bierschenk, who also moved to Arnum, appreciate. However, Jan Bierschenk also highlighted the need for charging stations for electric cars in the region, which is a current issue in many cities. Mayor Jan Dingeldey (CDU) focused attention on guaranteed childcare options close to home, which is important to parents.

Family-friendly offers in Hemmingen

In Hemmingen, parents have the opportunity to take their children as young as one or two years old to one of the 17 daycare centers, 11 of which are run by the city. These exquisite care offerings were particularly praised by Luisa Albat, who moved to Arnum two and a half years ago. Kathrin Frömberg, who came to the city in 2017, also appreciates that daycare centers and schools are within walking distance. The city has made it its mission to regularly inform parents about the available childcare options since 2012.

The event not only served as a welcome event, but also to establish contacts with daycare centers and to disseminate information about registrations and offers. To strengthen the families, the city donated cake, which certainly contributed to the positive atmosphere. Such campaigns are part of a larger trend: many municipalities and districts offer a one-time welcome visit for parents of newborns. These visits, also known as initial home visits or welcome services, inform parents about local family offerings, child care and financial services.

Support through national initiatives

The National Center for Early Help (NZFH) and the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) provide valuable information and materials for municipalities. These resources help cities improve family offerings and promote healthy child development. From the beginning of 2025, BIÖG will act as the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) and thus continue to support local initiatives.

With all of these measures, Hemmingen shows how important it is to create a family-friendly environment and how targeted information for newborns and newcomers helps to increase the quality of life in the region. The city's committed work and the active participation of families ensure that Hemmingen remains an attractive place to live for young parents and their children.
