Surprise in Freiberg: SGV meets strong Stuttgart Kickers!
On the 10th matchday of the Regionalliga Südwest 2025/26, the Stuttgarter Kickers will meet league leaders SGV Freiberg. The eagerly awaited duel will take place in the Wasenstadion in Freiberg am Neckar. The Kickers go into the encounter with mixed feelings as they have to compete with an ailing group of players.
SGV Freiberg has established itself in the regional league since its promotion as Oberliga champions in 2022. This season the team has exceeded expectations as they have won all their games so far and sit at the top of the table with an impressive ten point lead over second-placed FSV Frankfurt. Most recently, Freiberg triumphed 3-2 over Hessen Kassel and set an all-time record with nine wins from nine games.
The situation at the Stuttgarter Kickers
The personnel situation of head coach Marco Wildersinn's team is tense. Due to injuries, important players such as Felix Dornebusch and David Stojak, both with torn cruciate ligaments, as well as Christian Mauersberger (torn meniscus) and Oskar Hencke, who is also injured, have to miss. However, Mauersberger is back in team training. David Tomic, who is suspended due to a red card, is also missing.
Marco Wildersinn was positive about SGV Freiberg's performance, but also emphasized the strength of his team. Wildersinn, who took over as coach of the Kickers in January 2025 and was previously an assistant coach in Freiberg, has prepared the team well for the challenges.
Connections between clubs
The connection between the Stuttgarter Kickers and SGV Freiberg is historic. Marco Grüttner, a former Kickers goalscorer, later played for Freiberg and was the sporting director there. In addition, Karlo Kuranyi, a U20 international from Panama and the son of former striker Kevin Kuranyi, grew up in the Stuttgarter Kickers youth team. These connections could provide an additional attraction for the weekend encounter.
The A-youth team of SGV Freiberg reached the final of the DFB Junior Club Cup in 2004, but surprisingly lost 5-0 to Hertha BSC. Such experiences shape the history of both clubs and create a special atmosphere that also influences the current encounter.
The tension in the league is increasing and the Kickers face the challenge of surviving against the undefeated league leaders. Both teams are hoping for a win that could bring crucial points in the table.
