Freiberg gets involved: Big cleaning campaign for a clean city on Saturday!
The city of Freiberg am Neckar is taking the fight against waste problems into its own hands and is launching the “Freiberg – free from dirt” campaign. The initiative aims to eliminate wild garbage dumps, roadside packaging and cigarette butts under benches. As part of this offensive, a major cleaning operation will be carried out on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The meeting point for this is the Wasen car park on Talstrasse.
Overall, numerous actors are involved, including BUND, the climate workshop, the Neckarguides as well as the Oscar Paret School and many volunteers. Mayor Jan Hambach highlights the visibility of the commitment and emphasizes the importance of citizens' responsibility for their environment. In addition to the cleaning campaign, accompanying measures such as poster campaigns and public relations work are also planned with a clear focus on packaging waste, cigarette butts and waste from cars.
Long-term measures to avoid waste
The city is also pursuing long-term measures to address the waste problem sustainably. This includes the introduction of fines, the establishment of sponsorships for waste hotspots and increased social control to hold waste offenders accountable. Anyone interested can register for the cleaning campaign at: BUND.Freiberg-aN@web.de.
The upcoming cleaning campaign is not the first of its kind. The 20th Freiberg spring cleaning will take place on Saturday, April 5th. As part of this event, the entire city area will be cleaned by committed citizens under the motto “Together for more cleanliness and environmental protection”. Participants can freely choose their collection location, be it on their doorstep, in the park or on the playground. Agenda 21 provides waste bags and gloves free of charge.
Successes of the past few years
Over the last 20 years, such campaigns have already removed tons of rubbish from green areas, roadsides and waterfronts. According to the Federal Statistical Office, each German generated an average of 433 kg of household waste in 2023, which represents a new low. Nevertheless, the problem of carelessly thrown away rubbish remains relevant in view of plastic bags, cigarette butts and drink cans. Together with the various Freiberg organizations, including the AG Environment, Montessori School and Boy Scouts, we should succeed in making Freiberg even cleaner.
