Bundeswehr reorganized: Security at the center of consideration!

On June 28, 2025, the Federal Chancellor emphasized the importance of the Bundeswehr's new operational command in a speech. This command corps, which was launched on October 1, 2024, has established itself as the central point for national operational planning and leadership of the armed forces. Bietigheimer Zeitung reports that the command is responsible for operational planning, conduct and evaluation domestically and is also responsible for operational management for foreign missions takes over.

The Operational Command (OpFüKdoBw) coordinates all four branches of the armed forces - the army, air force, navy and cyber and information space - and serves as a central contact point for national authorities as well as international partners and multinational actors. This structure is intended to ensure a clear separation between strategic, operational and tactical levels in order to increase the efficiency and responsiveness of the German armed forces.

Setup and structure of the new command

Structural changes were made when the OpFüKdoBw was founded. It includes around 1,400 posts and is located in the Julius Leber barracks in Berlin and the Henning von Tresckow barracks in Schwielowsee. According to the Wikipedia article, full operational readiness should be achieved by April 1, 2025.

Lieutenant General Alexander Sollfrank is the commander at the head of the command, supported by Lieutenant General André Bodemann, who also heads the Territorial Command. The unit's badge, which symbolizes the merger of two previous departments, includes a black, red and gold ribbon and an Iron Cross. The Osnabrück Decree, which has been in force since May 1, 2024, regulates the orders and position of the command.

Important tasks and challenges

The OpFüKdoBw is entrusted with a variety of tasks. This includes prioritizing orders, coordinating support for NATO troops, managing official and disaster relief, and creating a common situation picture. The aim is to lead the emergency services efficiently and strengthen the country's strategy.

The Chancellor has emphasized that security must not be taken for granted. The challenges of the current geopolitical situation require constant adjustment of security strategies. This circumstance has given the new command a responsible and decisive role in the structure of the Bundeswehr. The deployment of special forces and close cooperation with international partners are of central importance in order to meet the complexity of security policy challenges.
