SENSATION in Freudental: Descendants of Jewish families return!
A unique and absolutely SHOCKING event is about to happen! On September 11, 2025, Freudental will become the center of memory and emotions for a weekend, when descendants of Jewish families who emigrated from this city between 1880 and 1920 return for the first time. These remarkable families, including distinguished names such as Levi, Stein, Marx, Herrmann, Blum, Spatz and the famous Rothschild family, come together to discover and honor the moving history of their ancestors. Mayor Alexander Fleig supported this impressive meeting with full conviction and emphasized the importance of engaging with the Jewish history of the community, which dates back to the 18th century, when the first Jews, including Seligmann Wolff, moved into the so-called Judenschlössle.
The emotional journey begins with a FULMINANT reception for the guests in the town hall, where the artist David Rubin exhibits his breathtaking paintings. A spectacular program is planned that will touch the hearts of the participants. On Friday, September 12th, the sensitive historian Steffen Pross will guide the descendants through the former homes of their ancestors. Sensational! On Saturday, guests can expect a THEATRE WALK in English under the title “The Last Shammes” - a truly gripping experience that will resonate in the minds and hearts of the audience. The Freudental families are invited to dinner - an emotional meeting of the past and the present!
A farewell with meaning
And that's not all! On Sunday, September 14th, the day begins with an ecumenical service, followed by a convivial brunch in the Johann-Klepper-Haus. The unforgettable memorial ceremony includes the unveiling of a memorial plaque at the former Jewish school and the planting of a memorial tree in the Garden of Remembrance. In a moving act of gratitude and remembrance, children in the holiday program will have their Jewish ancestors' family trees created and gravestones decorated with colorful ribbons - absolutely HEARTBREAKING!
The dramatic past of the Jewish community in Freudental is marked by INCREDIBLE ups and downs. From the middle of the 19th century, Jews made up over 40% of the population! The first Jewish families were protected by a letter of protection from 1731, which granted them extensive freedom. But the story was overshadowed by dark shadows. After Kristallnacht in 1938, most Jews emigrated, and the last 14 were deported in 1941/42. This SCARY past has left its mark, but now the community stands up to remember and recover!
The weekend ends with a furious conclusion at 6 p.m. with the PREMIERE of the documentary film “Freudental” by Thomas Lahusen. This film deals intensively with the moving story of a family that emigrated from this city and is an emotional tribute to lost life lines and countless memories. This return is not just a meeting, it is a CONSOLUTION for the souls of the past!
Please note that this sensational meeting between the memories of a great past and the challenges of the present reflects the pulsating heartbeat of Freudental. The Jewish community, with roots in this region since the 18th century, has a history that dates back to traumatic times, and it is crucial that we recognize this history. Let's remember what was and celebrate what the future can bring!
