The Burgfilmfest in Wertheim, which opens on Thursday, August 14, 2025, once again promises an exciting cinematic experience for film fans. First up is the highly anticipated opening film “Conclave,” which deals with the election of a new pope and is nominated for an impressive eight Oscars. The cinematic approach is highlighted by the depiction of political power struggles among the cardinals, led by Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, and the different views of Cardinals Bellini and Tedesco. The tense political circumstances are also compounded by the threat of terrorists using car bombs. In addition, the Burgfilmfest will offer many other highlights, as main-echo.de reports.

The second film at the festival is “Mission Impossible – Final Reckoning,” in which Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt searches for a Russian submarine called Sevastopol. The action and real stunts promise an exciting evening. Ready for some family fun, “How to Train Your Dragon,” debuting Saturday, August 16, is being reimagined as a live-action film. The story is about the friendship between Hiccup and the dragon Toothless, which will delight young and old alike.

Diverse film offerings

The family-friendly film “The Penguin of My Life” will also be presented on Saturday, which tells the heartfelt story of a teacher and his unusual friend, a penguin. Brad Pitt will receive special attention in a Formula I film that will be shown on Friday. As part of the family evening on Saturday, August 23rd, the latest Disney animated film “Elio” will be presented at a reduced admission price of 6.50 euros. Audiences can also look forward to the sequel to the dramatic comedy “Wunderschön” with Karolin Herfurth on Sunday, August 24th, as well as the film adaptation of “Cranko”, which highlights the story of the famous choreographer John Cranko.

Cultural highlights and final film

The Burgfilmfest also offers profound films such as “The Barbarians – Welcome to Brittany”, which deals with prejudice in a small Breton town, and the silent film “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, which will be shown on Wednesday, August 27th. In addition, the positive German art house film “Looking into the Sun” will be presented on August 28th, followed by the new version of “The Naked Cannon” with Liam Neeson after 30 years. The festival's films start at 9 p.m. and it takes place as always, regardless of the weather. Tickets are available for 9 euros at Knecht Rupprecht, 10 euros at the box office and 18 euros for the gymnastics event, with students only paying 8 euros.

Supporting catering is provided by the castle restaurant, which is open daily from 9 a.m. until dusk. Entry to the castle ruins is 2 euros, which completes the whole experience.
