Discover the Zerben Castle: Open day with history and culture!
On June 29, 2025, a special open day in the Historical Castle Zerben takes place in the Zerben district. Ms. Bach invites the guests to a free tour in the castle from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration for the management is not necessary, which makes participation particularly uncomplicated for all interested parties. In addition, donations will be collected on this day that will benefit a non -profit organization in order to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the place. This is another step to show the commitment to cultural revitalization and bring a piece of history closer to future generations.
The Zerben Castle is an impressive example of the country's historical architecture and was opened in 2010 after extensive renovation work as a memorial and castle. It was originally built as a simple manor house with a baronial courtyard and brewery. With a conversion to the classicist palace complex until 1847 and subsequent conversion as a cultural place, the castle reminds not only of its own history, but also of the important personality Elisabeth Noble and Freiin von Plotho, who was born here. Their impressive life, shaped by romantic and tragic twists, reflects a piece of social reality of the 19th century.
The story of Elisabeth von Plotho
Elisabeth von Plotho, born on October 26, 1853, spent a carefree childhood with three siblings. Tragic events, including her father's fatal hunting accident, led her mother trying to marry the girls. Elisabeth, who was announced with Leon Armand von Ardenne at the age of 14, went out of engagement in 1871 and married in 1873. Under the name Baronin von Ardenne, she first lived with her family in Berlin and later in Benrath near Düsseldorf.
Marriage brought about happy times and challenges. Elisabeth's husband was often on the road and during these absences she met Emil Hartwich, which led to a dramatic duel between Ardenne and Hartwich, which ended fatally. The social scandal about this incident even inspired Theodor Fontane with his novel "Effi Briest", who has parallels to Elisabeth's fate.
