Five permanent guests, consisting of two men and three women, are currently coming to the café, which is located in the living café of the LEIFHEIT Service Center. The fee of 30 euros covers three hours of care and meals. The food varies: on Thursdays a rich breakfast with rolls and pretzels is offered, while on Tuesdays coffee and various cakes are available. Activities offered include walks, circle games, gymnastics and board games. Language courses in Italian and French take place next to the café on Thursdays, adding to the diverse cultural atmosphere. Relatives can take part in a Caritas group on the third Tuesday of the month from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to exchange ideas.

A wide range of support

The Maltese people have extensive experience in accompanying and caring for people with dementia and their relatives. Maltese Diocese of Aachen emphasizes that a changed perspective on dementia and simple help can significantly improve the well-being of everyone involved. At Café Malta the focus is on activating and supporting people with dementia. Activities such as memory training, painting, crafts, making music and singing together promote well-being and activate the participants' existing skills.

In addition, the Malteser organization also offers a support and relief service (BED), which enables hourly care in a familiar environment. Qualified companions focus on the individual wishes and needs of those affected and their families. This not only creates space for relatives to relax, but also promotes social exchange, for example in the form of a get-together for relatives.

The Maltese dementia services are open to people of all denominations and backgrounds. They also offer helpful advice on questions relating to dementia. The overarching goal of Maltese Dementia Competence is to support and relieve the burden on both people with dementia and their relatives, based on scientifically based expertise on relationship management in care.
