Wendlingen's wooden parking garage: The future of living begins here!
The IBA’27 festival, which took place in May 2025, impressively presented the visions for better living and housing. As part of the International Building Exhibition 2027 Stuttgart City Region (IBA’27), numerous projects presented innovative ideas that are intended to enrich future urban development. An outstanding example was the new wooden parking garage in Wendlingen, which acted as a visitor magnet. This impression is particularly noticeable in the region as the presentation year 2027 approaches and the construction sites take concrete shape.
The wooden parking garage project, located in Wendlingen am Neckar in the Esslingen district, sets standards in construction and use. Planned as an oval, five-story building with a height of around 18 meters, the parking garage will offer space for around 350 cars and 150 bicycles. In addition, 20 e-car and 10 e-bike charging stations are planned, which is intended to promote environmentally friendly use of mobility. With its climate-neutral concept and a wooden construction that uses screw connections and no use of composite materials, the building will also be easy to dismantle.
Innovative usage options
The planners, the Wendlingen City Building Authority and Herrmann + Bosch Architects from Stuttgart, have also thought about possible conversions. The parking floors are designed so that they can later be easily converted into living or working spaces. This shows the project's commitment to promoting future-oriented and flexible architecture.
Another interesting feature is the central ramp system, which allows the building to be designed to create an inner courtyard in the future. This design promotes not only functionality but also social interaction among future uses.
Conclusion and outlook
The project started at the beginning of 2023, and the planned completion of the wooden parking garage is scheduled for 2024. This innovative project is seen as exemplary for future construction projects and supports the vision of urban development with fewer cars and a better quality of life. With this and other projects, the IBA’27 festival was able to impressively demonstrate what is possible in real estate and urban planning and how well thought-out concepts can promote a sustainable future.
