DHL is building a 16 meter high noise barrier in Köngen – this is how it goes green!
In Köngen, DHL is planning to build an impressive noise barrier to dampen the noise from an expanded postal freight center. This wall will reach a height of up to 16 meters and extend for a length of 800 meters. Planting with native plants will be realized on an area of 10,000 square meters, which not only offers aesthetic advantages, but also brings ecological advantages for species and nature conservation, as the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports. The construction is part of the necessary expansion work at the Köngen location, which has exceeded its capacity limits due to booming online trade.
A comprehensive noise insulation report has shown that high noise emissions are to be expected despite the optimization of operational processes. This highlighted the urgency of the project. In order to counteract possible negative perceptions among the public and residents, the Köngen local council has already approved the change to the land use plan and the development plan. The final decision on this will be made by the Wendlingen municipal administration association in mid-October.
Sustainable construction and technologies
The planned noise barrier is based on a highly load-bearing bored pile foundation with foundation diameters of up to 88 centimeters. The precast concrete parts are assembled precisely with millimeter precision. These modern construction methods ensure that the wall meets the required stability and noise protection requirements. According to DHL, the noise barrier system used has been in use for over 30 years and does not require artificial irrigation, which further reduces the facility's operating costs.
Köngen's urban planning is based on the regulations of the Building Code (BauGB), which determines the use of land. The strategic development goals of this plan are set out in the city's land use plan. The aim is to avoid undesirable urban developments and to implement sustainable environmental planning. Public participation is an integral part of this process; In Köngen there was little feedback during the public display of the plans. Nevertheless, the city of Wernau expressed concerns about possible additional burdens on the B 313 as a result of the project.
Noise reduction regulations
The initiative to create and optimize noise action plans is not just a local service. In noise-polluted areas, a review is carried out every five years to see how noise reduction measures can be implemented. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that the selection of these measures must be weighed up in terms of their effectiveness, costs and feasibility. In a published brochure, authorities can find practical tips for assessing the effectiveness of noise reduction measures.
The combination of advanced construction and strategic urban planning is expected to ensure that the noise barrier in Köngen not only meets the company's current needs, but also has a positive impact on the quality of life of residents by effectively attenuating noise.
