TSV Denkendorf II: Dramatic decisions in handball!

On May 30, 2025, a crucial day for several teams took place in the handball world. The women of TSV Denkendorf II missed promotion to the state league after suffering a significant defeat of 27:40 in the second leg in Freiburg. Despite a narrow home win in the first leg with 30:29, they were unable to turn the overall standings in their favor and therefore remain in the district league, like Stuttgarter News reported.

The men of TSV Köngen, who had to play against HSG Walzbachtal in the decisive first leg of the association league, were also unable to convince. The game ended in a draw 27:27, which the team perceived as an undeserved victory for HSG. Assistant coach Kai Schreiweis described a goal conceded shortly before the end as “annoying”, which increased the disappointment with the result, as Esslinger Zeitung notes.

Handball in Germany

Handball is one of the most popular sports in Germany, right after football. The German Handball Bundesliga (HBL) is very popular. It was founded in 1966 and attracts around 1.5 million spectators to the arenas every season. This enormous support is also reflected in the number of members of the German Handball Federation (DHB), which is now over 765,000. THW Kiel leads the HBL's all-time table with the most titles and has also frequently won the DHB Cup. For women, Thüringer HC is the clear leader in the all-time table of the women's handball Bundesliga, as Statista reports.

The popularity of handball is underlined not least by its successes at international level. The Danish national handball team celebrated its fourth world championship title in a row this year. The men's world championship took place between January 14 and February 2, 2025 in Croatia, Denmark and Norway. The German team, playing under coach Alfred Gíslason, started with a win against Poland but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Portugal on January 29.

Overall, this day in handball not only shows the major challenges facing the clubs, but also the outstanding position that this sport occupies in Germany. It remains to be seen how the affected teams will perform in the coming games and whether they will be able to better realize their ambitions for promotion in the future.
