Day of mourning in Poltava: Filderstadt is shaken by a tragic attack
On Thursday morning, the Ukrainian city of Poltava was hit again by a devastating drone attack. Two people died and 47 were injured. The mayor of Filderstadt, Christoph Traub, informed about it and reported that the target of the attack was an army recruiting center. The attack led to fires in a residential building and other civilian buildings. This incident greatly affected the local community, as Filderstadt had only taken over management of the twin town relationship with Poltava in January. A day of mourning was declared for Friday in Poltava to commemorate the victims, while Filder municipalities expressed their solidarity and condolences. Traub also plans to immediately check on site how support can be provided. A donation account has been set up on the city of Filderstadt's website to enable support for Poltava.
Last night was marked by tragic events not only for Poltava. In Kiev, citizens also experienced a “terrible and sleepless night” due to massive air strikes, as Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha reported. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attacks as one of the worst nights. The situation meant that many families were forced to seek shelter in subway stations, basements and underground car parks. The attacks caused “mass destruction in the heart” of Kiev, as reporters reported drones, explosions and machine gun fire. Despite all efforts, the Ukrainian Air Force managed to intercept 478 missiles, while 539 drones and 11 missiles were registered in the attack. The damage to buildings and rail infrastructure is significant.
Renewed attacks and consequences
In connection with the attacks in Kiev, Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko spoke out, describing the attacks as a “deliberate act of terrorism”. Although the Polish embassy in Kiev was damaged, there are no reports of injuries in the consular section. While US President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with arms deliveries to Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called for urgent air defense resources for Ukraine. In light of the agitation, Ukrainian President Zelensky called for increased sanctions against Russia and described the air strike as “deliberately massive and cynical.”
The devastating attacks on Poltava and Kiev are part of an increasingly intensifying conflict that has already resulted in massive loss of life and destruction. In February 2025, 14 people, including two children, were killed in a rocket attack on a residential building in Poltava. The city, which was initially spared at the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, is now home to many internally displaced people from other parts of Ukraine. The support of Filderstadt and other cities remains urgently needed for the regions affected by violence.
