New police unit in Museldall: security for eight communities!

On June 1, 2025, a new local police unit will be launched at Museldall Police Station. This project is part of a comprehensive initiative to establish local police in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which has already been successfully implemented in the capital, Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange. The new unit will cover eight municipalities in the Police Center-East region: Mertert, Grevenmacher, Wormeldange, Stadtbredimus, Biwer, Manternach, Lenningen and Flaxweiler. The aim of these measures is to improve police presence in public spaces in order to increase proximity to the population, as RTL Luxembourg reports.

Minister Léon Gloden emphasizes that the decision to set up a police unit in the Eastern Region is based on the presence of busy places and the associated increased risks of crime. There are often significant local public order problems in this region. Nevertheless, a remarkable statistic was recorded in 2024: the fewest crimes, be it against people, against property or in the drug sector, were recorded in the eastern zone. The effectiveness of the police unit is assessed both in terms of citizens' sense of security and through measurable success criteria.

Evaluation and feeling of security

Previous experiences in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette show that projects of this type have contributed significantly to improving citizens' sense of security. Gloden says the number of officers deployed on site will be adjusted based on discussions with local officials. This is a crucial point in order to ensure the most effective and needs-based police presence possible.

A pilot project, already launched in 2024, includes specific patrols in Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette, which came into force from July 1, 2024. Those involved include Léon Gloden, the mayor of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, the mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette, Christian Weis, and Pascal Peters, director of the Police grand-ducale. This project will run for a period of six months and has the same objective: to increase police presence in public spaces and to improve citizens' sense of security, as described in a report on the police.public.lu website.

  • Principle der 4P: Personal, Präsenz, Nähe, Prävention
  • Erhöhung der Anzahl der Polizeikandidaten von 160 auf 200 pro Promotion

Lydie Polfer highlights the importance of police presence, which is essential for the safety of citizens. Christian Weis also emphasizes the need for prevention and for the police to be close to the population. The specific patrols are strategically planned to maintain public order and ensure police visibility in crucial locations. There are also regular consultations between mayors and regional police departments to evaluate and adapt the patrol strategy.

The first phase of the pilot project will see 20 police officers deployed daily in Luxembourg and 4 in Esch-sur-Alzette. This ensures that citizens experience a visible police presence both Monday to Saturday and on Sundays, depending on operational needs. Patrol members wear a distinctive bracelet with the inscription “POLICE LOCALE,” which helps increase police awareness and identification among the community.

A final report of the pilot project will be prepared at the end of 2024 to summarize the results and discuss possible further steps.
