Denkendorf receives a new parallel tandem for more mobility!

Improving mobility for people with disabilities is the goal of various initiatives in the Stuttgart area. A notable example is the parallel tandem that was purchased by the Füreinander in Denkendorf e.V. association. As the Esslinger newspaper reports, this latest mobility offer can particularly support older people, residents of nursing homes and people with disabilities.

The tandem is one of the versatile bicycles that has an electric motor. This is particularly advantageous for trips in the hilly surroundings of Denkendorf. Mayor Ralf Barth has already undertaken the maiden voyage together with Margret Harsch. In this tandem, the driver and passenger sit next to each other, which makes communication much easier while driving.

Trips and participation

The rides on the parallel tandem are free for passengers, but donations to support them are welcome. Trips are limited to approximately one hour and typically take place Monday to Friday between spring and fall. Weather-dependent conditions, such as dryness and moderate temperatures, must be taken into account to ensure a safe journey. The drivers currently include eight volunteers, and the club is always looking for more supporters.

Another innovative offer is provided by the Theresia Hecht Foundation. After a financial donation of 13,722.79 euros from “Aktion Mensch”, a new parallel tandem for children and young people in St. Johann was purchased. The tandem, also known as “fun2go”, is used after a comprehensive introduction by employees of the Schlather medical supply store. This promotes the mobility of young people and enables them to explore their surroundings independently, which is a big step towards self-determined living.

Integration and inclusion

Inclusion is a central concern of many of these projects. This means that both people with and without limitations can be mobile together when traveling on the parallel tandem. The trips not only promote exercise, but also social contacts between passengers. The passengers have the freedom to actively pedal or rest, depending on their individual needs. The operation of the tandems, which will be available from March 26, 2023, is similar to that on Forum Society Inclusive is explained.

The interactions and shared experiences on these bikes are not only enriching for the participants, but also strengthen social interaction in the community. For those interested in taking part in such trips, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance and receive a short introduction to using the tandem.

Overall, these initiatives show how an integrative and mobility-promoting environment can be created through the joint efforts of associations, communities and sponsors. The search for a lockable garage for the tandem in Denkendorf remains one of the next challenges.
