Weissach im Tal: Groundbreaking ceremony for fast internet has taken place!

In Weissach im Tal, a rural community in the Rems-Murr district, the expansion of the fiber optic network is imminent. The urban broadband expansion, which is being driven forward by the municipality and various service providers, aims to significantly improve the digital infrastructure and eliminate “white spots” in internet provision. The operation for the expansion is carried out by Netze BW, which is responsible for civil engineering and the laying of empty pipes and fiber optics, and by NetCom BW, which is responsible for network operations and technology. Krzbb.de reports that the fiber optic expansion is scheduled to start in September 2025 and a total of 168 house connections are planned. Currently, less than 10% of households are provided with fast internet.

Mayor Daniel Bogner, who has been in office since March 2022, emphasized the importance of the expansion from the start. The community therefore sees the groundbreaking as a liberation for digital development in the region. The expansion is crucial for economic growth and social participation, as fast internet becomes indispensable for both businesses and private households. The mayor invites everyone involved in the project to a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony.

The planned infrastructure

A central element of the project is the 17 kilometer long route construction, which is intended to ensure the backbone data supply from Rottmansberg to Mittelbrüden. This main network of fiber optic cables is intended to connect the local network areas with each other. Bkz.de explains that with this step the municipality is ensuring that all households and businesses have access to high-speed internet, which is in line with the federal government's gigabit strategy, which aims to connect half of all households to the fiber optic network by the end of 2025.

Although the Rems-Murr district recorded an increase in gigabit-capable connections from 32% to 41.6% within a year compared to the rest of the country, Weissach im Tal lags behind expectations due to its rural structure. The internal economic expansion in other parts of the district is stalling, such as the start of construction of “Our Green Fiber Optic,” which has been postponed to 2026, which illustrates the urgency of fiber optic expansion in Weissach.

A look at the developments

Fiber optic internet is increasingly seen as the future of broadband, offering faster speeds and less susceptibility to disruption than other technologies. Statista reports that the fiber optic share in Germany is currently around 11%, which is quite low in international comparison. In order to close the digital divide, it is crucial that projects like the one in Weissach im Tal are implemented.

The fiber optic expansion will not only lead to an improvement in internet supply, but will also make a decisive contribution to securing the future of the community.
