New bicycle route at Bad Cannstatter Bahnhof: Stuttgart is becoming more bike-friendly!

Today, June 4, 2025, the new bicycle route at Bahnhofsplatz in Bad Cannstatt was ceremoniously inaugurated. This project is part of a comprehensive initiative to expand and improve the cycling infrastructure in Stuttgart. The main cycle routes 6 and 33, which run along Eisenbahnstrasse, Bahnhofstrasse and Deckerstrasse, benefit significantly from this measure. Jürgen Mutz, head of the city's civil engineering department, emphasized that an attractive cycling route will be created in the area of the train station, which will benefit both the safety and comfort of cyclists. The successful cooperation of all those involved contributed significantly to the successful completion of the construction of the square and the adjacent areas, reports the city of Stuttgart.

A key goal of this new cycling infrastructure is to support sustainable mobility in Stuttgart. Back in February 2019, the Stuttgart local council decided to make the city more bicycle-friendly. This is in line with the cycling concept from 2009, the update of which is currently in progress. The city is therefore placing high priority on promoting bicycles in order to specifically strengthen cycling traffic. As part of a two-track process, the opinions of citizens and other stakeholders on future developments in cycling and walking are to be recorded. A survey conducted from March 14 to April 4, 2022 gave citizens the opportunity to express their views.

Sustainable mobility and bike-friendly measures

The redesigned bicycle lane on Bahnhofsplatz is not the only measure the city is taking. Cyclists not only benefit from the new cycle path, but also from additional bicycle parking spaces equipped with bars. In addition, a bicycle garage is planned to be built on the square later this year, which should further increase the attractiveness of cycling in Stuttgart. This initiative is part of the comprehensive cycling concept, which develops and prioritizes numerous packages of measures to promote cycling.

An important part of updating the cycling concept is the evaluation group that works as part of the Bicycle Policy Audit process (BYPAD). This group is made up of representatives from all political groups, user associations and specialist offices. BYPAD has set itself the goal of improving municipal cycling promotion through a systematic analysis and definition of priorities. The approach, which was founded in 2009, has now been used in almost 200 cities from 24 countries.

At the end of the process, the city will be awarded the BYPAD certificate, which documents the efforts to improve cycling policy. This means that Stuttgart is well on its way to becoming one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Germany, while at the same time citizens are actively integrated into the processes to improve cycling and walking routes.
