Münster plans new refugee accommodation: better protection for 100 people!

The city of Münster has set itself the goal of improving the accommodation situation of refugees in the city. For this purpose, she plans to build two new refugee accommodation in Albachten-Ost and on the Hobbettstraße in Handorf. Every accommodation will offer space for up to 50 people. The initiative not only serves short -term accommodation, but also provides long -term use of the buildings as regular apartments. The city is reacting to the existing challenges in refugee aid, which have been reinforced by a steadily growing number of refugees, especially since the dramatic increase in refugee figures in 2015. news today reports that the construction in Handorf should begin at the end of 2025 and the completion is planned for the third quarter of 2027. The work in Albachten is expected to be started in July 2026, with a completion in the second quarter of 2028.

The plan for the construction of these new accommodations takes place in accordance with a holistic concept for accommodation and support for refugees, which the city of Münster developed in the years 2000/2001. This was further developed in 2017 with the action concept "refugee people in Münster" and confirmed by the city council. A central element of this concept is the even distribution of the facilities over the urban area to ensure structural integration into the local living environment. City of Münster emphasizes that the new facilities should usually include up to 50 places per location, but a maximum of 100 places.

Integration and support of refugees

With this initiative, the city of Münster not only pursues the goal of increasing the number of accommodation, but also promoting the integration of the refugees. The new locations should be supported by intensive care both by social and home services and by volunteering. At the same time, the gradual task of the previously rented transition solutions is part of the plan. There are currently around 2,400 places in Münster in 40 refugee facilities, of which over 60% can be used for a limited period.

The selected locations for the new institutions are the result of a mediation process in which representatives from politics, administration, free welfare and church and police were involved. The city of Münster has thus adapted to the feedback and needs of the various interest groups and is committed to a solution that benefits both the refugees and the local population.

In summary, it can be said that the plans for the construction of refugee accommodation in Münster are an important measure to counter the challenges of the current refugee situation and at the same time to promote the integration of refugees into the urban community. The gradual implementation of the accommodation concept shows that Münster is willing to invest in the accommodation and support of refugees in the long term.
