Mühlhausen starts smart lighting project: safety at night!
On June 2, 2025, the city of Mühlhausen will announce the start of a significant project to modernize its street lighting. From June 3rd, the construction of intelligent outdoor lighting will begin as part of the urban Smart City project. This innovative project is intended not only to increase energy efficiency, but also to increase safety at night and take environmental aspects into account. A total of over 70 modern light points will be installed at three locations.
In the first construction phase, 16 robust LED lights will be installed on Hoher Graben. These lights are equipped with integrated sensors that enable them to detect movements and adjust the brightness as needed. This not only saves energy, but also reduces light pollution, which contributes to an increased feeling of safety among the population. Further measures include replacing the lighting on Stephanweg and Germaniastieg.
Modern technology for more safety
Amber lights with a reduced proportion of blue light will be installed on Stephanweg to protect nocturnal insects. A smart lighting solution is used on the Germaniastieg, which is sensor-controlled and equipped with additional comfort lighting. The use of smart lighting technology is crucial to creating a sustainable, safe and energy efficient urban environment. These systems use modern technologies such as LED lights and motion sensors to increase efficiency, as the mobilecity.de platform explains.
The intelligent systems automatically adapt to environmental conditions and thus reduce energy consumption. They help extend the lifespan of lighting as they dynamically adjust light intensity based on the time of day and the presence of people or vehicles. The therapeutic benefits of intelligent control are diverse: Adaptive lighting control significantly increases safety in urban spaces.
Outlook for the future
The entire measure is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2025. After successful testing, the intelligent lighting systems will be gradually introduced in other parts of the city, with these adjustments being tailored specifically to the needs of the respective areas. The project in Mühlhausen represents a further step towards a comprehensive smart city strategy that is already being pursued in many other cities in Germany such as Hamburg, Berlin and Munich.
The city of Mühlhausen shows once again how modern technologies and new concepts can help improve the quality of life of citizens and find answers to the challenges of an urban future. The combination of efficiency, environmental protection and safety is the key to sustainable city life, as other international examples show.
