Funding of 3.2 million euros for wastewater structure in Abtsgmünd!

The municipality of Abtsgmünd in the Ostalbkreis has received a significant funding commitment from the state of Baden-Württemberg for the second phase of its wastewater disposal structure. A total of 3,225,900 euros will be made available to expand and modernize the Untergröningen sewage treatment plant. This measure aims to ensure future-proof, economical and ecologically compatible wastewater disposal. Construction work is expected to begin in spring 2026, after the first construction phase was completed in 2022, in which sewers were built from Wegstetten and surrounding farmsteads to the Untergröningen sewage treatment plant, funded with 1.1 million euros. rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de reports that the entire reconstruction of the wastewater disposal structure is considered extremely important to increase efficiency and environmental sustainability.

A report confirmed that the connection to the Untergröningen sewage treatment plant represents the most economical solution for the community. As part of the overall project, the Wegstetten sewage treatment plant will be shut down, as will smaller sewage treatment plants in the Gschwendhof, Stein and Dinkbühl farms. These closures have the support of Environment Minister Thekla Walker, who highlights the benefits of larger and more efficient plants, particularly with regard to the closure of smaller, more inefficient wastewater treatment plants. The Wegstetten sewage treatment plant was put into operation in 2000 and was designed to dispose of wastewater for 130 residents. In the future, the wastewater will be led to the Untergröningen sewage treatment plant via a new pumping station and a three-kilometer-long pressure pipe. baden-wuerttemberg.de

Financing and schedule of the construction phases

The financial framework conditions for the construction phases are clearly defined. The first construction phase had a total cost of 1,559,000 euros, of which 1,106,700 euros were provided as a grant from the state. The municipality's own funds amounted to 452,300 euros. Completion of this section was scheduled for June 30, 2025. The second construction phase includes total costs of 6,405,000 euros, of which the state will cover 3,225,900 euros, while the municipality will also provide its own funds amounting to 3,179,100 euros. Completion is targeted for December 1, 2028.

With regard to the future wastewater infrastructure, an optional third construction phase is also being considered, which could provide for a connection to the drinking and wastewater network of the surrounding towns of Rötenbach and Algishofen. The districts of Fach and Algishofen currently operate their own water supply from springs. The “Vorderer Rötenbach” district is already connected to the existing drinking water network, which should contribute to further improving the water supply. rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de
