A young man and his friend dared to jump into the water on the Neckar without thinking. But the fun turned into a real nightmare when one of them had to return to the shore due to exhaustion. However, the other, an unknown person, sank in the water and eventually became a missing man. The large-scale search that ensued was not only bitter but also frustrating. Drones and helicopters combed the area as time passed and hope faded. No sign of the swimmer, no sign of life.
The desperate search
Hours passed and darkness enveloped the Neckar, but as fate would have it, the missing man's body was finally discovered in the cold depths of the river on Monday afternoon. In 2023, the German Life Saving Society registered 411 fatal accidents in waterways in Germany - a depressing increase of 31 cases compared to the previous year! For the first time since 2019, the number of drownings exceeds 400. It is a shocking reality that society everywhere, suffering from increasing heatwaves, cannot ignore. These shocking statistics force us to think about our own safety and that of our loved ones.
An appeal to all water sports enthusiasts
Ute Vogt, President of the DLRG, raises her voice and warns of the shocking dangers that waters can pose even in the most picturesque surroundings! “An increase in drownings is worrying and should raise awareness among all parents!” she exclaims vehemently and calls on us all to be more careful.
